Event Notes : (from Boston Globe & Boston Herald)
The Bruins held their skills competition at the FleetCenter yesterday, but Dafoe did not participate, playing master of ceremonies with Channel 7 sports anchor Gene Lavanchy. Goaltender Kay Whitmore was recalled from Providence for the competition. In a repeat of two years ago, Shawn Bates was the fastest skater, circling the oval in 13.984 seconds, and was the only player to break 14 seconds. Ken Belanger, also in a repeat of two years ago, won the hardest shot with a blast of 98.7 miles per hour, assisted by Joe Thornton - Belanger broke his stick and used some of Thornton's lumber. Andrei Kovalenko was second (93.6). In the accuracy shooting, P.J. Axelsson required just six shots to hit all four targets, capturing an event long dominated by Ray Bourque. In the team event, the Jason Allison-led Gold team prevailed over the Thornton-led Black, 12-7.

Flashy play for day: Players' skills on display in competition
Bruins Notebook/by Rich Thompson

The Bruins held their annual Super Skills competition yesterday at the FleetCenter.
The festivities included a puck control relay, a speed skating competition, hardest shot and shooting accuracy derbies, a pass and score relay and a breakaway relay. The B's broke into two camps for the event.
Team Black was captained by Joe Thornton and consisted of Brian Rolston, Ken Belanger, Darren Van Impe, Mikko Eloranta, Hal Gill, Samuel Pahlsson, Dixon Ward, Jarno Kultanen and goalie Andrew Raycroft.
Team Gold was captained by Jason Allison and consisted of P.J. Axelsson, Sergei Samsonov, Shawn Bates, Mike Knuble, Don Sweeney, Zdenek Kutlak, Andrei Kovalenko, Pavel Kolarik and goalie Kay Whitmore.
Belanger's first attempt in the hardest shot competition resulted in a shattered stick. He went to the bench, borrowed Thornton's blade and proceeded to test the twine with a blistering 98.7 mph slap shot.
Belanger's second shot was clocked at 97.0 mph, which was far ahead the 93.6 blast registered by runner-up Kovalenko.
Belanger said he was once clocked faster and blamed Thornton's stick for the power slide.
``Two years ago I did one at 101 and I probably should have used a stiffer stick,'' Belanger said. ``I had to use Joe's stick and that cost me 3 miles per hour. I think my stick has been sent to the league to be investigated.
Axelsson captured first place in the shooting accuracy competition. He hit four targets with six shots. Thornton was second with four targets in seven shots.
Allison, the Bruins' designated sniper, missed the net on his first three shots and nailed just one target.
``I can't comment about anybody else's shooting after the show I put on,'' Allison said.
Bates won the title as the B's fastest skater. The center from Medford completed his trip around the perimeter of the FleetCenter ice surface in 13.984 seconds.
All proceeds from the competition went to various charities.
